Color and Durability

Ipe heartwood can vary in color from reddish brown, to a more yellowish olive brown or darker blackish brown; sometimes with contrasting darker brown/black stripes.

Rated as very durable; excellent insect resistance. Superb weathering characteristics. It is 8.7 times harder than Pine.

Even though we use many of the hardest and most dense woods in the world no one can control the environment outdoors. Wood is a naturally porous and fiberous material that is contantly in motion based on temperature and humidity.

When any wood is exposed to extremely humid and damp conditions without sunlight it can attract mold. Additionally, when left in direct sunlight these woods will gradually lose their vibrant colors after a period of years. Luckily, neither of these situation is permanent.

Because of the incredibly durable nature of these woods they can be cleaned with nearly any cleaner without damage. They can also be oiled periodically to maintain their beautiful color if desired. The sun is what primarily fades the color of wood so items kept out of direct sunlight will retain their rich color.
